Western Wall
This section shows photos from the Western Wall. Much of the stone used for building in those times is called “meleke”, a white, coarse crystalline limestone used for representative buildings like the Western Wall and possibly other parts of the Herodian Temple. It is easy to quarry, but once it is exposed to air it hardens and develops a pleasant yellow hue.

First century street. This street was fully uncovered in the mid-1990s and dates to the decades before the city’s destruction by the Romans in AD 70. The street is 32 feet (10 m) wide and was paved with large slabs up to a foot thick. The street was covered with massive stones pushed down by the Romans. These can be seen toward the rear of the photo where they were moved after the street was excavated.
